Teacher Pay Scale Geography Map
Not sure which pay bracket your school falls into? Search your Local Authority or borough. If it is not listed here, you fall into the standard Rest of England rate.
The highest pay bracket covering central boroughs like Westminster and Camden.
Bordering boroughs like Croydon, Barnet, and Hounslow receive mid-tier weighting.
Counties bordering London (e.g. Surrey, sections of Kent and Essex).
Understanding the Teachers' Pension
A Defined Benefit monster that dramatically affects payslips.
Single-Rate Deduction
Unlike Income Tax where you only pay 40% on the amount over £50k, the Teachers' Pension Scheme applies a single tax percentage to your entire salary. This means moving from £48,019 to £48,020 shifts your entire pension deduction from 8.6% to 9.6%.
Net Pay Arrangement
The TPS is collected directly from your paycheck before Income Tax is applied. Meaning your 8.6% or 9.6% deduction directly shrinks your taxable baseline, artificially protecting more of your money from the 20% or 40% HMRC tax band hits.
Pro Rata and Extra Allowances
TLRs, SEN points, and FTE fractions.
Using our FTE Toggle
If you teach 3 days a week, your FTE is 0.6. Our core engine mathematically slices your base pay, calculates taxes correctly on that smaller band, and ensures pension brackets reflect your actual gross pay, rather than your theoretical M6 full-time bracket.
The "TLR Trap"
Taking on additional responsibilities can occasionally push upper-main scale teachers directly across a TPS pension boundary or the £50k+ Higher Rate tax boundary. Be sure to model your potential TLR in our calculator above to see if the resulting Net Pay actually justifies the massive increase in workload.
