Understanding Alcohol Duty

Alcohol Duty (or excise duty) is a tax levied on alcoholic products. Since August 2023, the system has been simplified: the stronger the drink, the higher the tax.

Beer Duty

Duty on beer is calculated based on its Alcohol By Volume (ABV). The rate is applied per litre of pure alcohol in the finished product. There's a lower rate for beer between 1.2% and 3.4% ABV.

Wine Duty

Wine between 1.2% and 14.5% ABV is taxed per litre of product (not pure alcohol). Sparkling wine is taxed at the same rate as still wine. Stronger wines (above 14.5%) are taxed per litre of pure alcohol.

Spirits & Other

Spirits, liqueurs, and other fermented products (like cider over 8.5%) are taxed at the highest rate, based on the litres of pure alcohol they contain.
