Understanding The 2015 Pension
A massive deduction for a massive payout.
Massive Contribution Rate
Most private sector employees pay 5% into their pension pots. Police officers uniquely pay between 12.44% and 13.78% of their entire basic salary out of pocket. This creates an incredibly brutal short-term effect on your net monthly take-home compared to a private sector job paying the exact same gross.
Net Pay Protection
Because these deductions are routed via a "Net Pay Arrangement", that entire 13.44% slice is removed before HMRC calculators assess you for 20% or 40% income tax. It forces your taxable base far lower, granting indirect tax relief.

London & Unsocial Hours
London weighting (both city bounds and fringe) is a core basic addition that pushes your tax bracket up simultaneously. Crucially, night shift/unsociable hours payments are usually calculated structurally differently, occasionally falling outside standard pensionability clauses.
