2026/27 Grade Medians Reference

Because every single Civil Service department is legally allowed to negotiate their own pay awards independently, there is no "Universal Pay Scale". To standardize this tool, we use the broadly accepted median cross-departmental HR baselines for 2024:

Administrative Officer (AO)£25,000£28,500
Executive Officer (EO)£29,500£33,000

Understanding the Alpha Pension

Why civil servants pay specific rates.

Single Percentage Banding

The Alpha pension has strict earnings borders. If you earn up to £34,500, you pay 4.6% of your whole salary. If you earn £34,501, your contribution jumps to 5.45% of your whole salary. This is highly important when evaluating non-consolidated bonuses or overtime, as they can suddenly pull your entire earnings into a steeper pension bracket.

Net Pay Arrangement

Like the NHS and Teachers, the Civil Service takes your Alpha contribution out of your paycheck before Income Tax is calculated. Therefore, a 5.45% deduction does not actually reduce your take-home pay by exactly 5.45%, because it lowers your income tax burden proportionally.

Departmental Differences

Why the exact numbers matter.

Custom Salary Overrides

Because an HEO at HMRC might earn £36,200 while an HEO at Ministry of Justice earns £34,500, our calculator allows you to toggle "Override Median Salary". This turns the tool into a pure 1-to-1 tax and Alpha modeling engine so you can input the exact job offer they sent you.

London Weightings

These are integrated natively into your base salary for tax and Alpha calculations. They are not 'bonuses' and are fully pensionable and taxable under standard rules.
